ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certificate

ISO 14001:2026 environmental management system set-up, certification and preparation for the certification audit.

In short

ISO 14001 is the international Environmental Management System (EMS) standard created so that organisations can systematically manage their environmental impacts, improve their environmental performance and manage environmental legal and other applicable requirements.

  • The current edition is ISO 14001:2026; the 2015 edition was withdrawn on 15 April 2026
  • The new edition focuses more strongly on climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency
  • An integrated management system can be created with ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001
  • Certification is carried out not by ISO but by independent certification bodies

What Is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the international Environmental Management System (EMS) standard created so that organisations can systematically manage their environmental impacts, improve their environmental performance and manage environmental legal and other applicable requirements.

The current standard is ISO 14001:2026. The ISO 14001:2015 edition was withdrawn on 15 April 2026 and replaced by ISO 14001:2026. While maintaining the existing approach to environmental management, the new edition improves the structure and applicability of the standard and focuses more strongly on current environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, resource efficiency and environmental performance.

ISO 14001 creates a systematic structure for the organisation to identify the environmental impacts arising from its activities, products and services, to manage them and to continually improve its environmental performance.

Purpose of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

The basic purpose of ISO 14001 is to help the organisation make its environmental responsibilities part of its day-to-day operations and strategic management.

In this context, the organisation:

  • Identifies its environmental aspects and impacts,
  • Assesses environmental risks and opportunities,
  • Establishes an environmental policy and environmental objectives,
  • Improves the management of waste and resource use,
  • Monitors energy and water use,
  • Controls environmental impacts such as emissions and discharges,
  • Tracks environmental legal and other requirements,
  • Measures and evaluates its environmental performance,
  • Prepares for environmental emergencies,
  • Takes environmental impacts into account in supply and life cycle processes,
  • Carries out continual improvement activities.

ISO 14001 supports organisations in managing their environmental impacts proactively by integrating them into planning and operational processes, rather than addressing them only after a problem has arisen.

Benefits of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

Depending on the organisation's field of activity and environmental impacts, ISO 14001 can contribute to:

  • More systematic management of waste,
  • More efficient use of energy, water and other resources,
  • Planning work to reduce environmental impacts,
  • Tracking environmental legal requirements,
  • More effective management of environmental risks,
  • Improving operational efficiency,
  • Reducing unnecessary resource consumption and the associated costs,
  • Measuring and monitoring environmental performance,
  • Raising employees' environmental awareness,
  • Managing suppliers' environmental performance,
  • Meeting the environmental expectations of customers and other interested parties,
  • Demonstrating the organisation's approach to environmental sustainability,
  • Supporting new market and customer opportunities

According to ISO's current assessments, organisations implementing ISO 14001 can obtain benefits such as reducing waste, optimising energy and water use, making compliance with environmental legislation easier, improving stakeholder confidence and supporting new market opportunities.

ISO 14001 and Environmental Performance

ISO 14001 is a management system approach that aims not merely at obtaining an environmental certificate, but at the organisation continually improving its environmental performance.

For this reason, the system is managed within the cycle:

Identifying Environmental Aspects Assessing Risks and Opportunities Setting Objectives Implementation Measurement and Monitoring Evaluation Continual Improvement

The organisation's impacts on the environment may differ according to its activities. For example, in production facilities, energy and water consumption, waste, emissions, use of chemicals and use of natural resources may be among the significant environmental aspects.

For Which Companies Is ISO 14001 Suitable?

ISO 14001 can be applied in different sectors and in organisations of different sizes.

For example, the following can be assessed under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System:

  • Industrial and production facilities,
  • Machinery and metal businesses,
  • Automotive and supplier industry,
  • Food businesses,
  • Chemical and plastics sector,
  • Textiles and ready-made clothing,
  • Construction and contracting companies,
  • Energy businesses,
  • Logistics and warehousing organisations,
  • Mining and natural resource sectors,
  • Electrical and electronics manufacturers,
  • Service and trade organisations,
  • Public and private sector organisations

How the standard is applied is determined by the organisation's activities, environmental aspects, risks, size and the environmental conditions in which it operates.

ISO 14001 and Climate Change

Climate change is today one of the important elements of environmental management.

The 2026 edition of ISO 14001 aims to link organisations' environmental management systems more strongly with current environmental priorities. The standard establishes a stronger link with issues such as climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency.

For this reason, when establishing an ISO 14001 system, it is important for organisations to assess not only their environmental impacts but also the current environmental conditions and related risks that may affect their activities.

ISO 14001 and Other Management Systems

ISO 14001 can be applied in an integrated way with other ISO management system standards.

In particular, an integrated management system can be created together with:

  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management System
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety Management System
  • ISO 50001 – Energy Management System

In this way, common processes, documentation, internal audits, risk assessments and management review activities can be managed in a more integrated manner. ISO 14001:2026 is also structured to support integration with other management system standards.

ISO 14001 Certification Process

The ISO 14001 certification process starts with an assessment of the organisation's activities and existing environmental management practices.

In general, it can be planned as follows:

  1. Determining the organisation and the certification scope
  2. Assessing existing environmental management practices
  3. Identifying environmental aspects and impacts
  4. Assessing risks and opportunities
  5. Establishing the environmental policy and objectives
  6. Determining legal and other applicable requirements
  7. Creating the environmental management system documentation
  8. Planning operational controls
  9. Establishing emergency preparedness
  10. Monitoring and measuring environmental performance
  11. Carrying out the internal audit and management review
  12. Conducting the certification audit
  13. Certification following the conformity assessment
  14. Maintaining and continually improving the system

Certification is carried out not by ISO but by independent certification bodies.

About the ISO 14001:2015 Certificate

Many searches are still made on the internet in the form of “ISO 14001:2015 Certificate”, “ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Certificate” and “ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System”.

However, ISO 14001:2015 is no longer the current edition. ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and replaced the 2015 edition. ISO's official record clearly states that ISO 14001:2015 has been withdrawn.

For this reason, organisations planning a new certification or system set-up must take the ISO 14001:2026 standard as their basis.

Organisations holding an ISO 14001:2015 certificate should discuss the transition requirements and transition timetable with their current certification bodies.
