ISO/IEC 27001:2022 information security management system set-up, risk analysis and coordination of the certification process.

In short

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international Information Security Management System (ISMS) standard that enables organisations to manage information security risks systematically.

  • The current standard is ISO/IEC 27001:2022; the 2013 version has been withdrawn
  • It aims to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information
  • It is not only for IT companies; it can be applied by any organisation managing information assets
  • The certificate does not mean that no data breach will ever occur; risks are managed systematically

What Is the ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management System?

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international Information Security Management System (ISMS) standard that enables organisations to manage information security risks systematically.

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 aims at establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving a management system for protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information the organisation holds or manages. The standard is designed so that it can be applied whatever the organisation's size, sector or field of activity.

The current standard is ISO/IEC 27001:2022. The old ISO/IEC 27001:2013 version has been withdrawn by ISO and replaced by the 2022 version. The amendment ISO/IEC 27001:2022/Amd 1:2024 has also been published for the 2022 standard.

ISO/IEC 27001 is not only for IT companies. It can be applied by any organisation that manages information assets such as financial information, customer and employee data, commercial information, intellectual property, technical documents, production information, software and systems.

Why Is ISO/IEC 27001 Important?

Today, information security does not consist only of taking technical measures against cyber attacks. Information security requires many elements to be managed together, including people, processes, technology, physical security, suppliers, access rights, business continuity and legal requirements.

ISO/IEC 27001 provides organisations with a systematic structure for:

  • Identifying and assessing information security risks,
  • Classifying and protecting information assets,
  • Controlling access rights,
  • Managing information security incidents,
  • Assessing supplier and external service provider risks,
  • Supporting business continuity and information security continuity,
  • Tracking legal, contractual and other requirements,
  • Monitoring information security performance,
  • Creating a culture of continual improvement

ISO/IEC 27001 focuses on managing the information security risks the organisation faces. For this reason, the standard is based not on applying the same security measures for every organisation, but on establishing an appropriate information security management system in line with the organisation's activities and risks.

Benefits of the ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management System

ISO/IEC 27001 certification and the management system based on it can contribute to organisations in the following areas:

  • It increases the confidence of customers, suppliers, employees and other interested parties in information security.
  • It ensures that information security risks are assessed systematically.
  • It creates a structure for identifying, classifying and protecting information assets.
  • It helps information security vulnerabilities and risks to be detected earlier.
  • It creates a controlled approach to unauthorised access, data loss and information security incidents.
  • It supports the management of legal, regulatory and contractual information security requirements.
  • It contributes to managing information security risks that may affect business continuity.
  • It ensures that information security risks that may arise from suppliers and external service providers are assessed.
  • It develops information security awareness and employee responsibility within the organisation.
  • It supports the measurement, monitoring and continual improvement of information security processes.
  • It contributes to protecting corporate reputation and critical information assets.
  • It supports meeting information security expectations, particularly for corporate customers, international business partners and supply chains in certain sectors.

Important: Holding an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate does not mean that an organisation will never experience a data breach or cyber security incident. The purpose of the standard is to ensure that information security risks are addressed with a systematic management approach.

About ISO/IEC 27001:2013

The expressions ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System or ISO 27001:2013 Certificate can still be found on the web and in some old documents.

Although this expression is an old term used in search engines, ISO/IEC 27001:2013 is no longer the current standard. In ISO's official records, the 2013 version is shown as “Withdrawn” and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is indicated as the current version.

For this reason, the current standard must be taken as the basis in new certification work.
