ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certificate

ISO 50001:2018 energy management system set-up, energy performance indicators and preparation for the certification audit.

In short

ISO 50001 is the international Energy Management System (EnMS) standard for organisations to systematically manage their energy performance and to continually improve it by monitoring energy use and consumption.

  • The current standard is ISO 50001:2018; the amendment Amd 1:2024 was published in 2024
  • It does not mandate a specific saving rate or technology; it is based on continual improvement of performance
  • Energy use is measured, analysed and managed with objectives
  • It can be integrated into ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems

What Is the ISO 50001 Energy Management System?

ISO 50001 is the international Energy Management System (EnMS) standard for organisations to systematically manage their energy performance and to continually improve it by monitoring energy use and consumption.

The current standard is ISO 50001:2018. The ISO 50001:2011 edition has been withdrawn and replaced by the ISO 50001:2018 standard. In addition, Amd 1:2024, containing the changes relating to climate change, was published for the standard in 2024.

ISO 50001 offers a systematic management approach for measuring energy use, evaluating energy performance, setting objectives, analysing energy data and continually improving performance.

The standard does not mandate a specific energy-saving technology. Instead, it is based on the organisation understanding, measuring, managing and improving its own energy performance.

Basic Purpose of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System

The basic purpose of ISO 50001 is to create a management system through which the organisation can continually improve its energy performance.

In this context, the organisation:

  • Establishes its energy policy,
  • Analyses its energy use and consumption,
  • Identifies significant energy uses,
  • Establishes energy performance indicators,
  • Sets energy objectives and action plans,
  • Measures and monitors energy data,
  • Evaluates its energy performance,
  • Carries out work to improve energy efficiency,
  • Reviews the results and continually improves the system.

ISO 50001 can be applied in a way that is compatible with the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach used in other management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. For this reason, it can be integrated into existing management systems.

Benefits of the ISO 50001 Certificate

Depending on the organisation's activities and energy use structure, the ISO 50001 Energy Management System can contribute to:

  • More systematic management of energy use,
  • Measuring and monitoring energy performance,
  • Identifying unnecessary losses in energy consumption,
  • Controlling energy costs,
  • Carrying out energy efficiency work in a planned way,
  • Making energy objectives measurable,
  • Improving operational efficiency,
  • Taking data-based decisions on energy performance,
  • Supporting environmental performance and sustainability work,
  • Demonstrating the organisation's corporate approach to energy management

ISO 50001 offers organisations a management framework for improving their energy performance; however, it does not mandate a specific energy-saving rate or the use of a specific technology.

For Which Organisations Is ISO 50001 Suitable?

ISO 50001 can be applied by organisations of different sizes and sectors that use energy.

In particular, it can be used to make energy management systematic for:

  • Factories and production facilities,
  • Businesses in organised industrial zones,
  • Machinery and metal industry,
  • Automotive and supplier industry,
  • Food and textile businesses,
  • Chemical and plastics industry,
  • Cement and construction materials manufacturers,
  • Iron and steel and foundry facilities,
  • Logistics and warehousing facilities,
  • Commercial buildings and facilities,
  • Energy-intensive businesses,
  • Large-scale service organisations

ISO 50001 provides a framework for managing energy performance regardless of the organisation's size or field of activity.

ISO 50001 and Energy Efficiency

ISO 50001 is not an application focused only on reducing energy consumption. The basic approach is for the organisation to continually improve its energy performance.

For this reason, in addition to energy consumption, the cycle:

Energy Use Measurement Analysis Energy Performance Objectives Improvement Re-measurement

is an important part of the system.

Regularly tracking the organisation's energy consumption data, understanding changes in energy performance and identifying opportunities for improvement are among the basic elements of this system.

ISO 50001 Certification Process

The ISO 50001 certification process starts with an assessment of the organisation's existing energy management practices and scope of activity.

The general process can be planned as follows:

  1. Determining the organisation's activity and energy scope
  2. Assessing existing energy management practices
  3. Establishing the energy policy and objectives
  4. Analysing energy use and consumption
  5. Determining energy performance indicators
  6. Creating the energy management system documentation
  7. Monitoring and measuring energy performance
  8. Carrying out the internal audit and management review
  9. Conducting the certification audit
  10. Certification following the conformity assessment
  11. Maintaining and continually improving the system

ISO clearly states that certification to ISO 50001 is possible but that ISO itself does not issue certificates. Certification is carried out by independent certification bodies.

ISO 50001:2018 and the 2024 Climate Change Amendment

The Amd 1:2024 – Climate Action Changes amendment to the ISO 50001:2018 standard was published in 2024. This amendment is part of the updates to ISO management system standards on taking climate change into account in the context of organisations' management systems.

For this reason, it is important to take ISO 50001:2018 and the related 2024 amendment into account when establishing a new ISO 50001 system or updating an existing one.
